Welcome to Anarchist Summer School
February 18 - 20th, 2011

Hello and welcome to Anarchist Summer School, an educational conference and convergence happening  on the 18th- 20th February 2011, at Black Rose Books, Tutu Queer Space, Jura Books, Stucco housing cooperative and other community venues in Sydney. We are the organising collective, and our background is in radical reading groups and student environmental groups, although we are also involved in various anarchist collectives in Sydney.

We're running three days of workshop and forums on different aspects of anarchist theory and practice. Some current topics include: experiences of capitalism, anarcho-feminism, people of colour and post-colonial anarchism, workers' control and anarcho-syndicalism, anarchist spaces, indigenous struggles and different streams of anarchist thought and practice. Click on the 'Program' tab at the top of the page to find out more.

The organising collective would like to hear your ideas on what you would like to see happen at the convergence, what topics you would be keen to learn about, and to answer any questions you've got about the convergence. Contact us on anarchistsummerschool [at] gmail [dot] com

We would also like to invite interested folks to help out in the lead up to summer school! We need people to distribute flyers in the next few weeks, help in the kitchen, set up and pack up venues, whatever you can do!

On the final afternoon of Summer School, we invite conference-goers to a tea party, zine fair and all-in discussion. There will also be space in the afternoon for open self-organised small group discussions and reportbacks from established groups.

See you in February! Love from the Anarchist summer school organising collective

Register Now!

Registration has now opened! By filling out a registration form, you help us to estimate the number of people coming to workshops so that we know how much food to provide and how big the spaces need to be. To register, just fill out the form here.

Callout for Zines & Self-Organised discussion groups- Sunday

Workshop submissions are now closed. Sorry! There's plenty of content to keep us all busy though, check out the 'Program' page for more info.

Also, we are holding a radical zine fair on the afternoon of Sunday the 20th of February, which is the last day of summer school. Bring your radical, DIY and political zines!

This afternoon will also be a chance for established groups and new folks to organise small group discussions and possibly plan for the future. If your group would like to hold a discussion or you have a burning question you wanna chat with comrades about over a cuppa, let us know and we'll flag it for Sunday.

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. We stand on this land today as beneficiaries of an incompensated and unreconciled dispossession which began over 200 years ago and continues today.

Many of the descendants of those dispossessed live just down the road in abject poverty. As anarchists, we recognise that this history of dislocation and abuse has contributed to the injustices and inequality we observe in contemporary society. At Summer School, there will be a chance to hear first hand stories of indigenous struggles in Australia. We hope to learn how to be good allies for future struggles.

We acknowledge both our privilege and our obligation to redress the situation: to remember the mistakes of the past, act on the problems of today, and build a movement to change the continuing story of dispossession.

If you are reading this, you are standing on Aboriginal land.
